But to the point.
As I mentioned in the previous post, Sourcebooks has done a foreign rights deal and DREAMING ANASTASIA is going to be published in Turkish! In honor of this uber exciting moment, I am doing a giveaway.
First- here's what you will win. Check out the two pictures below.
Above is the full prize package. Specifically - a signed copy of DREAMING ANASTASIA, a pack of stick on Russian matroyshka doll stickers (the matroyshka doll plays a big role in DA and (oooh, spoiler alert) continues to be a presence in the sequel and beyond), DA bookmarks, HAUNTED bookmarks, and DA postcards. That's a lot of swag.
And I wanted this latest contest to reflect the fairy tale/folkloric aspect of the DREAMING ANASTASIA trilogy. The witch Baba Yaga, the lacquer box, the matroyshka doll, the story of Vasilisa the Brave, the rusalka (a malevolent Russian mermaid) that's a key character in HAUNTED - all of these come from Russian/Slavic folklore.
So what do you have to do to be in the running for this haul of swagilicious loot?

I'm following your blog - have been for a while :)
ReplyDeleteI've been sitting thinking about fairy tales and I find I'm drawn to the darker tales by the Brothers Grimm - not so much the fluffed up versions Disney turned them into, but the older ones. I have a few favourites but if I had to choose one I'd probably go with was Hansel and Gretel, just for the deliciously dark overtones!

ReplyDeleteI've always loved Sleeping Beauty. I like the magic, and the villian and how the hero has to save the heroine at the end.
I was always facinated by "The Little Match Girl". It's a sad story but I identified with the little girl's love for her grandmother.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fairy tale would have to be Cinderella. I would choose Cinderella because it seems closest to something that could be real. Although it's total made up, it's realistic, and I like that :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fairy tale would have to be Rumplestilskin. I even stole the book from my elementary school library some 20 years ago & still have it!! My dad used to read it to me & do the voices & that made it even more magical. I think I love it so much because of the cleverness behind the characters & their out smarting the little evil thing!!
Good luck everyone!!
My favorite is East of the Sun, West of the Moon. I love how they have to overcome something as huge as being a bear and fall in love all the same. Then she has to go rescue her love because she made the mistake of not trusting him.

Congrats, thats awesome news.

For real fairy tales I like the orginial Brothers Grimm. I know they are darker than the "modern" versions but I enjoy them. I found this awesome copy once with beautiful illustrations, I did not end up buying it and have regretted it ever since. For the more "modern" retellings, I like Cinderella. Which I am sure is because deep down we all want a fairy godmother, a handsome prince and a HEA.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fairy tale is the Wizard of Oz. I loved it as a kid and am loving it all over again with my own kids
Hi Joy! Congrats on your news! I'm a follower and my favourite fairytale is Beauty and the Beast which I've loved since I was a little girl. I love the fact that Belle falls in love with someone despite their looks and then he turns out to be a handsome prince! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the contest and good luck to everyone!

ReplyDeleteWell I've always, always loved the original fairy tales. Brothers Grimm and the others as well. One of my traditional favorites is Snow White, because I just love how things went. The Queen tried to kill Snow White two times before the apple and the prince's clutzy men dropped Snow White's coffin, because he wanted her in his castle due to her beauty and the apple piece popped out on impact. Then the queen is forced to wear the red, hot iron slippers and dance til she died. Very cool. Disney made it kid friendly which is fine, but I love this version.
My other favorite is the Princess in Disguise because it was just such a unique little tale. I read a kiddie version of it in grade school and reading the real Brothers Grimm version made it seem almost scarier! Loved that aspect! The Princess turns herself into a peasant person to avoid having to marry her father, eck! And becomes a cook for another prince...don't want to tell the whole tale again, but it's sort of like a Cinderella story.
Cinderella was another great one, with the stepsisters cutting off pieces of their foot to get the slipper to fit first. Awesome! Brothers Grimm did amazing things to their fairy tales.
I love how fairy tales were somewhat darker stories not even meant for children, other than to scare them. Still a Disney girl though and I love my Disney movies, but these original tales are just awesome! Always been a fan of these since I was in grade school!
Sorry for the long post! :)
These are such great responses aleady! Keep 'em coming. It's fascinating to read everyone's fairy tale choices and explanations - sort of the primal story patterns and why we like them. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm now following your blog ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great contest! I love contests. You're so wonderful, lol.
Gosh, favorite fairy tale? I have many but I would have to say Beauty and the Beast as so many others have said already. I love the whole concept of the story involved, finding beauty inside oneself no matter how despicable on the outside one can look or act to others.
