Second Skin Blog Tour

Today, as part of the SECOND SKIN BLOG TOUR, I welcome author and writerly friend, Judith Graves from up north in cold Canada to the blog. Second Skin is the sequel to Under My Skin, book 1 of the Skinned series.
Here's a description of book 1:
All her parents wanted was for Eryn to live a normal life…
Redgrave, Alberta had its share of monsters before Eryn moved to town. Mauled pets, missing children. The Delacroix family is taking the blame, but Eryn knows the truth. Something stalks the night. Wade, the police chief’s son and Redgrave High’s resident hottie, warns her the Delacroix are dangerous. But then so is Eryn–in fact, she’s lethal. But she can’t help falling for one of the Delacroix boys, dark, brooding–human Alec. And then her world falls apart.
A normal life? Now that’s the real fairytale.
Leap Books, 2010ISBN-13 978-1-61603-000-1ISBN-10 1-61603-000-3
And here's what book 2 is going to be like:
ith FIENDS like Eryn…
Monsters. Bloodsuckers. The evil. The damned. Eryn McCain knows they exist— she’s been hunting them since she was a child. At sixteen, she’s ready to take on all comers. Being a shapeshifter gives her an advantage when it comes to her unusual part-time job. The hours suck and the pay is, well, non-existent, but bonuses like inhuman strength and night vision make tracking scary beasties a dream come true. Especially in a town like Redgrave.
When an ancient demon targets Redgrave High, Eryn and her crew of hunters must face their innermost fears to prevent the Harvest Moon Dance from becoming one serious Monster Mash. Loyalties are tested and temptations abound. With questions ever brewing, can Eryn share a future with the brooding, noble, human Alec—the hunter after her heart? Or will she succumb to her enemy’s son, Wade, a seductive predator as bloodthirsty as she is?
What happens when you’re both the beauty and the beast?
Leap Books, 2011ISBN-13 978-1-61603-006-3ISBN-10 1-61603-006-2
And now let's see what Judith had to say when I asked her a few questions!
Oh, she’s back alright, she’s feisty that way. ;) Eyrn is a monster hunter, she tracks rogue paranormal creatures and banishes them from this world, however, she’s a bit challenged with this roles as she herself is half-human, half-wolven. She can shapeshift into a wolf. But she hasn’t fully shifted – she’s scared of what her wolf will bring. Bloodlust. Rage. Instinct over compassion. Each day it gets tougher to resist her dark side. In Second Skin her small (but creepy!) town is invaded by an ancient demon and suddenly everything Eryn fears comes to pass. She’s living a nightmare and can’t wake up. Hopefully some questions are answered in Book 2, but be prepared for a killer ending to setup Book 3 of the SKINNED series, Skin of My Teeth.
2. You're a speculative fiction/paranormal kind of girl. Why? What attracts you to genre fiction? What books/films inspired your writing?
I write in this genre because I’m also a huge fan. I’ve always read horror/paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy and while I do occasionally branch out to other genres, I often find myself wishing contemporary fiction or thrillers would bust out and incorporate some supernatural elements. I often feel something is missing. Some aspect of the unknown.
I’m a huge Buffy fan, I admit that freely. Eryn, the lead in the SKINNED series, was inspired by her – the snark, the insecurities, the ass-kicking. I also adore Jim Butcher’s adult urban fantasy series, the Dresden Files. Hmm…if I compare Butcher’s Dresden and Whedon’s Buffy – it’s clear I enjoy reluctant hero types living in dark, hidden, mystical worlds – fighting a new creature each week. I think that sums up the SKINNED series as well.
3. Not everyone may know that you are also a screenwriter, which you talk about on your blog. Why screenwriting? How is it different than novel writing? Any screenplay role models you'd like to chat about?
I’ve recently dabbled with writing scripts and have several in the works. I’ve co-writen a spec script for network television - with my brilliant writing partner Dawn Ius. We’ve also developed a new series treatment and pilot episode which is being pitched around. Hollywood for hurry up and wait. ☺ The plot structure I established for writing scripts has actually helped enormously with plotting my fiction projects. I recommend every fiction writer read Blake Snyder’s, Save The Cat: The Last Book On Screenwriting That You’ll Ever Need. Changed my writing life, it did.
Steven Speilberg (Poltergeist), Diablo Cody (Juno, Young Adult), John Hughes (Breakfast Club, Uncle Buck, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), William Goldman (The Princess Bride), James Cameron (Terminator) and Shauna Cross (Whip It) are current influences.
4. Will Eryn have any more adventures after Second Skin? i.e. -- is there a book 3 in the works?
You betcha! Skin of My Teeth will launch in 2013 and sees Eryn taking on a deck of malevolent spirits possessing the Redgrave High student body via a trading-card game. It’s all fun and games ‘til somebody dies.
4. Tell us a little about the Alec/Wade love triangle in the book. Do you enjoy writing romance scenes?
As Eryn learns more about her wolven side, things heat up between her and the boys. Her internal struggle – beast against human nature - is reflected in the push / pull she feels for Alec, the noble human hunter, and Wade, the bloodthirsty vampire with magical powers. In many ways the love triangle serves to highlight Eryn’s own growth / conflict.
I enjoy generating sparks between my characters and struggle to keep it “real” while building some heat. These scenes are often more challenge to write than what I would call, fun.
5. What's up next for Judith Graves?
A few things. There’s Book 3 and possibly Book 4 of SKINNED. I also have a steampunk prequel series to SKINNED coming out in 2014 called STRANGEWAYS after the lead character, Amelia Strangeways – a ghosthunter / necromancer working for the Hunter Council. The same Council that may or may not be corrupt in Eryn’s day. There are cross over characters between both worlds – aka, the immortal ones.
You can read the intro tale, Strangeways Versus The Wraith in SPIRITED, an anthology of ghostly tales featuring authors such as Maria V. Snyder, Candace Havens, Shannon Delany, Dawn Dalton, Kitty Keswick and more! Proceeds from sales of SPIRITED go to 826 National, a literacy-based charity.
7. Advice for aspiring writers?
Read. Write. Repeat.
8. Buffy or Edward? Why?
Buffy! She has my enduring loyalty – especially after the “Buffy vs. Dracula” episode.

It was a Crawfish weekend
Went for crawfish this weekend. If you live here in Texas it's what you do during the 'season.' These are from Willie's Icehouse in case you need to know that kind of thing. Crawfish, potatoes, sausage, corn (although we'd eaten the corn by the time I snapped this pic) and beer to wash it all down. Preferably something local like my St. Arnold's Amber, although it doesn't really matter. For the uninitiated, crawfish look like tiny little lobsters. Just to understand their pedigree, please note that they are also referred to by some as 'mudbugs' and that my first experience with them when we moved here from Chicago is that I saw some in our ditch after it rained a bunch. But the ones you eat are generally 'farmed' in Louisiana. Someone boils them up with spicy seasoning, not unlike a crab boil and you snap off the head, pull the meat out of the tail and if you're not me, you suck the gunk out of the head. Beware the Ides of March
Yeah, Caesar, you're going down in a second. And Brutus is taking you there. This movie still, btw, comes from the singularly worst version of Caesar that I've ever seen (although the one with Charleton Heston as Marc Antony comes a close second... actually there is NO good version), but mesmerizing because Marlon Brando plays Marc Antony and well, it's Brando for God's sake. I used to show this version when I taught the play, pausing on a crowd scene where one of the extras gets caught in another extra's toga and has to bat his way out. Yeah, when you're teaching Caesar to 30 10th graders six times a day, this is high comedy. Saturday, October 22, 2011

And the Wolfy Swag Winners are
Anyway, tossed the contestants in the magic sorting, um, contest hat. Shook it up real good. And the winners are:
Jessica Kennedy - for her choice and explanation of Derek from Kelly Armstrong's The Reckoning series. Jess - you win the UMS choker set! Whoot! Or rather - howl!
Caitlin - for her choice (a popular one) of Sam from Shiver by my fellow ABLA girl, Maggie Steifavater. Caitlin thinks Sam is sweet and she loves the way he interacts with Grace. Well, me too, Caitlin. Interacts is such a good general term for all the angsty werewolf nookie, drama and trauma going on in Shiver. Caitlin wins the set of UMS character cards! Wahoo!!
Speaking of which, boy oh boy! Do you know that people have been asking to buy my obviously coveted ARC of Linger?! Crazy stuff going on out there. And they say people aren't reading. Obviously, they are wrong.
But back to the winners: Jessica and Caitlin - please email me at joy@joypreble.com and let me know where Judith should mail your prizes! Who knows, she may throw in some extra swaggy goodness while she's at it. Did you hear that, Judith?
Congrats! Thanks for playing.
Coming soon - my review of JT Dutton's fabulous upcoming Stranded. And possibly an interview. Gotta see if she has the time to let me chat her up.
Til next time...

Welcome Judith Graves and Under My Skin
First, a little about the book - and check out the simply gorgeous cover!
All her parents wanted was for Eryn to live a normal life... Redgrave had its share of monsters before Eryn moved to town. Mauled pets, missing children. The Delacroix family is taking the blame, but Eryn knows the truth. Something stalks the night. Wade, the police chief's son and Redgrave High's resident hottie, warns her the Delacroix are dangerous. But then so is Eryn--in fact, she's lethal. But she can't help falling for one of the Delacroix boys, dark, brooding--human Alec. And then her world falls apart. A normal life? Now that's the real fairytale. Here's what I found out when I picked at Judith's quite fertile and creative brain!
1. Welcome Judith! First, a little about you. How did you get here? I'm always curious about debut author journeys. Some highlights and basics of yours?
I started off as a rather nerdy (yet cool!) kid playing her guitar in the hallway by her locker when she should have been in physics class. I joined a few bands, recorded a few indie CDs. Went to college, got hitched, played in said bands – toured around Alberta, worked full time – but always….I wrote. Short stories, flash fiction, lyrics, poetry, and eventually novels.
I lucked out and landed a contract with a small press for my first book, Under My Skin (UMS), but it had to go through some major edits. There came a time when writing fiction, working full time, and performing as a musician brought me to the breaking point. I might have seemed pretty together on the outside, but inside I was a trainwreck, a run-away mining cart from The Temple of Doom. Since I needed my day job to help my hubby feed and house our three fur kids (it’s all about our two labs and our blond bombshell tabby!) – I had to choose between writing and music.
Since I made that decision (and it was a heartbreaker – I LOVED being a part of a five-piece band), I have two more books in the works, I’ve joined the Class of 2k10 and will be touring NYC with them in May during Book Expo America, I’ve been booked for writer workshops and conferences, and will be touring schools and libraries across Alberta – possibly Canada in 2011.
Wow. I just shake my head at all the opportunities that have opened up. It’s like a dream. Follow your passion, people!
2. Why werewolves? And wolven - what exactly are they - and is there a difference? Tell us about the alternative world you've created for Under My Skin.
UMS is an exploration of different mythological creatures vying over one small town on the edge of civilization. The beasties in UMS are fairly traditional and follow the usual lore. Where things get interesting is in the mixing of humans and paranorms – or paranorms with other creatures of magic, etc. Most of the main characters in UMS are mixed bloods trying to deal with the limitations and abilities of their dual natures. Throw in a battle for the town and the humans in it – and there’s loads of conflict, romantic tension, and dark humour to be had.
That being said, in UMS, werewolves are soulless beasts at the mercy of their master (they are created not born), while wolven are wolves with the ability to shapeshift into human form (they are born not created). Eryn, the main character in UMS, is half human / half wolven.
3. Having read your first couple of chapters, I'm really liking feisty Eryn McCain. Can you tell us a little about how you came up with her as a character? Is she influenced by any other characters that came before her? And a fun question - If I rifled through her purse, what would I probably find?
Eryn arrived on the set pretty much as is. Her dry humour and sarcasm, her sass, her inner turmoil. I wanted a female lead who was strong, yet vulnerable – a girl who could take care of herself, but one who hoped that someday she would have others in her life to help shoulder her burdens.
Eryn doesn’t have purse – that’s too girly. But she does carry a backpack to keep up appearances – it’s filled with schoolbooks she never opens and a smattering of makeup – just the essentials. All Eryn needs is her silver athame tucked away in its leather shoulder holster and she’s ready to rock and roll.
4. Why fantasy? What do you like about writing the genre? Is this the only genre you write?
I love paranormal fiction, both adult and YA. As a library technician in an elementary school, I’ve even found some amazing gothic-ish picture books and MG novels to adore. I am fascinated by the mysterious, the supernatural, the unexplained.
All of those elements can still be found in contemporary fiction – the magic is more internal – the bond between family, friends, and the odd experiences we go through in this crazy life. That’s why I also write edgy YA contemporary fiction and hope those stories will soon find homes.
5. Loved your book trailer! Can you give us any hints about the Eryn/Alec romance?
Thanks! Madison at M2 Productions created it for me. All her trailers are marvy.
There’s actually a love triangle in UMS. Eryn is attracted to Alec, a human hunter, but is also drawn to Wade, a vampire with magical abilities. They represent her duality. The light and the dark….but there are shades of gray in all the characters. Falling in love is not always an easy breezy thing.
6. Writerly influences?
Ray Bradbury, John Wyndham, Margaret Atwood, Robertson Davies, L. M. Montgomery….and sooooo many more.
7. Chocolate or peanut butter?
Oh…I usually ask a similar question – crunchy or smooth PB? (I’m smooth, BTW) But this question can only be answered like this…BOTH! ;)
8. Buffy or Edward? Who'd win that smackdown?
Lol….oh, Buffy would kick Eddy’s sparkly ass. (Not that there’s anything wrong with sparkly).
9. Where do you write? Can you describe a typical writing session for us?
What my writing day looks like: wake up at 5:30am, get coffee, take dogs out, write until 6:30, go to work, write on lunch break (jot ideas down in notebook always by my desk. Toilet paper also works.), get home, burn supper, revise stuff I wrote that morning. Go to bed at precisely 9:07pm. REPEAT.
10. Advice to those who'd like to have their own book on a shelf some day?
Writing is an emotional outlet, yes. Writing involves some kind of inspiration, yes. But if you want to get published, you have to push through times of emotional upheaval and can’t wait around for inspiration to strike. You make it happen – every day at your laptop or writer’s den.
You must be sooo excited! Cheers to Under My Skin! And okay, I agree - chocolate AND peanut butter. (have you ever put a dollop of peanut butter on top of chocolate pudding?) And yes - Buffy would indeed kick Edward's sparkly ass. Just sayin...
Thanks Joy – I can’t wait to read Haunted and see how Anne and Ethan’s romance develops….cause they get together, right? Right?!
AND NOW!!! The giveaway!! Judith has graciously donated some swag related to the novel: a choker set AND a set of character cards, both of which are pictured here. Thus we will have TWO winners. So here's the contest and let's get wolfy and creative about those answers!
Other than Twilight's Jacob Black (yes, I'm taking him out of the running; it's just too easy and too obvious. And it's my contest so stop griping!), who's your favorite pop culture werewolf and why? (tv, movies, songs, comic books... everything's game but you know who) Post your answers on my blog between now and Monday night 4/26 and I'll put you in the contest hat. Remember there will be two winners, one for the choker set, the other for the character cards!

Only in Texas and other Sunday stuff
So now I live in Texas. And we like to give old Illinois a run for its money. So in the spirit of "Seriously?" - did you know that one of our current candidates for gov. is Farouk Shami - who INVENTED THE CHI!! You know - as in flat iron. As in the greatest invention in the Western world for wavy haired girls like me. And I thought it was fun last time when Kinky Friedman ran.
Beyond that, THANKS to YAEdge and 2k10 co-pres. Judith Graves for hosting this interview with me. http://yaedge.blogspot.com/2010/02/yaedge-feature-author-joy-preble.html I'll be hosting Judith next month when her paranormal YA, Under My Skin, debuts, so be on the lookout!!
Happy Valentine's to one and all. <3
Will keep you posted on all things HAUNTED. (Still. So. Excited!)

Welcome Kitty Keswick and Freaksville! plus ARC giveaway!
It’s been a roller coaster! My original publisher closed the YA line, and my rights were sold to a new publisher. But I’m enjoying the ride. Sometimes you have to just strap yourself in and hold on…maybe even let out a scream or two.
2. Freaksville is definitely a fun, frothy fantasy. Is fantasy your favorite genre? Do you write other genres?
I’ve tried to write novels that were straight contemporary, no fantasy, no paranormal, just normal, but, alas, somehow a bit of fantasy always seems to seep into the plot. Instead of fighting it, I decided to run with it. It’s where I’m at, at this stage in my writing.
When you read fantasy, who are your favorite authors?
I read so much, there are some terrific books out there. I can tell you I’ve enjoyed Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampire series. I also like Catherine Clark and Kim Harrison, and I even read this great debut novel, Dreaming Anastasia.
3. In the spirit of getting to know you a little better, I see on your website that you love 80's movies and the late, great John Hughes. So here's the question. You're hosting a dinner party. Which John Hughes characters would you invite and why? How would you seat them? What would you serve? Anyone you'd make sure not to seat together? (Oh how I am loving the cleverness of this question.)
Oh how fun! I’d seat Claire Standish (Breakfast Club), Samantha Baker (Sixteen Candles), and Andie Walsh (Pretty in Pink) at one table; of course, they were all played by Molly Ringwald. It would be fascinating to see how the freak (PIP), the forgotten (16), and the princess (Breakfast) all react to one another. I’d also like to seat Steff (James Spader, Pretty in Pink) next to John Bender (Judd Nelson, the juvenile delinquent in Breakfast Club) because Steff really needs to be taken down a notch. Nobody played a creep—spoiled-rich-guy-jerk—better than James Spader. I’d serve pimento loaf sandwiches from which we’d remove the meat and toss it onto a nearby statue, top it with Captain Crunch smash, and pour pixy sticks filled with flavored sugar into our mouths, then wash it down with a Coke in honor of Ally Sheedy’s character Allison Reynolds in the Breakfast Club, which is one of my favorite movies.
John Hughes mastered teenage angst. I hope his work will be rejuvenated.
4. You and Judith Graves are both my Class of 2k10 mentees (is that even a word?) since I am now an official graduate of the school of hard knocks debut experience with 2k9. And you are co-presidents! So tell us about 2k10 - what's going on and how you ended up one of the fearless leaders.
The Class of 2k10 is an amazing group of debut Middle Grade and Young Adult authors. We’re from a variety of publishers, but we’ve banded together to promote our books. Being the co-president of the group is a ton of work, but worth it. We share a lot, and it’s this camaraderie that makes it special. We even started a mentor program, where the pervious class shares their wisdom with the new class. I’m honored to have Joy as my mentor.
We started working on the class of 2k10 back in April 2009 and just launched in January 2010. We have an amazing website at http://www.classof2k10.com/.
Congrats on your graduation, Joy! 2K9 is wonderful group of talented authors. I’m honored to carry on the torch.
5. Your publisher is Leap Books. Tell us a little about them.
6. I see that you grew up in California - with a vineyard in the family! Did you like Cali? Do you still live there? Are you a California girl?
In the seventies, my grandfather bought several acres of land in Denair, California. He planted his vineyard there and had it running for few years before he died. He didn’t make wine for public consumption; he sold his grapes to wineries. I’m not sure where he would have taken it; I was in third grade when we sold it. (I did get to squish grapes with my feet for his private stock, and my grandmother made raisins.)
I used to listen to the huge oak leaves whisper in the wind; it sounded like waterfalls at Yosemite. The rows and rows of grapes were my playground and my theater; I “talked” out my stories back then. It was a magical place and still inspires me.
I just went back to central California for the holiday. It’s sad the vineyard is now a housing development. That’s progress. It’s still sharp in my memory, and maybe someday I’ll write about it. But for now, werewolves and vampires and ghosts have my pen.
I love California. I’ve lived in a few states since, but it’s still one of my favorite places. I don’t live in there now, but I’ll always be a California girl. My novel Freaksville takes place in the make-believe town of Stony Creek, California, and I modeled the high school after my old high school.
7. So back to the supernatural. Do you believe? Ghosts? Vampires? Werevolves? Things that go bump in the night? Any paranormal experiences that led you to your love of all things fantasy?
I do believe in ghosts. I’ve had a few experiences that raised the hairs on the back of my neck—my name called out when no one was around, things flying off shelves, shadows…
As for vampires and werewolves, my lips are sealed…some secrets are best kept. J
8. Advice to aspiring writers?
READ. That’s the biggest thing a writer can do to improve. Learn your craft. Read books on plotting, characters, pacing, conflict and resolution, etc. Then next thing is learn to edit your words. Forget about how long it took to write them. If they don’t move the story forward or have a specific purpose to the plot, cut them. Novels aren’t written. They are rewritten and rewritten and rewritten. Freaksville had so many drafts. The original is so far from the final. It’s a process, but it’s only painful if you let it be so.
9. Why YA?
I love the time in characters’ lives where they are on the verge of possibilities, where they are standing at this beginning in which everything is new and each path will lead them to something amazing. Teens are that genre, and that’s where my voice fits best.
10. Anything I haven't asked that you're totally dying to answer?
Nope. Thanks Joy, I had a lot of fun.
Want to win an ARC of Freaksville? Then comment on my blog on the following question: What's cool about werewolves?
